Clio Duo Alternatives: Pick the Tool by the Job, Not the Brand

Clio Duo was Clio's AI assistant inside Clio Manage: it worked over the matters, contacts, documents, and billing data your firm already kept in Clio. As of September 2026, Clio folds that assistant into its Manage plans and sells legal research separately. The right alternative depends on which job you are hiring AI to do.

What Clio Duo was, and where it went

Clio announced Duo on October 7, 2024 as an "AI-powered legal partner" built into Clio Manage, its practice-management product. Lawyerist's February 2025 coverage described it the same way: an assistant inside the practice-management software that answered questions about matters, retrieved client information, and helped with communications.

The work it did was practice-management work. Clio's help center article on AI features in Clio Manage documents an AI launchpad that schedules events from documents, automates bills, analyzes documents, answers questions about matters and firm operations, creates time entries and tasks, and assists with writing. The same page states the AI follows your existing Clio Manage permissions, and that firm settings carry a 90-day AI event log.

The branding has moved. As of September 2026, clio.com/duo redirects to Clio's legal AI software page, the help center files those capabilities under "Clio Manage AI Features" without the Duo name, and Clio's pricing page answers "Is AI included in my plan?" with "Yes, on Core and above. AI comes as part of the plan rather than as a separate add-on."

So a Duo alternative is really an alternative to two things: the AI now shipping inside Clio Manage, and Clio Work, the separate product covered below.

The category mistake in most Clio Duo comparisons

Search this term and you get lists that put Duo next to Harvey, CoCounsel, Luminance, and Spellbook. Those are four different product categories, and lining them up against a practice-management assistant produces the wrong shortlist. Sort by the job instead.

Practice-management AI works over your firm's operational data: matters, contacts, calendars, time entries, invoices, and documents filed to a matter. It drafts the client update, catches the deadline buried in a scheduling order, and writes the time entry you forgot on Tuesday. It is not built to tell you what the Tenth Circuit held last year.

Legal-research AI works over public law — statutes, regulations, case law — and, in the better implementations, over your own case file at the same time. General-purpose AI — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — writes well, knows nothing about your matter, and carries a confidentiality question you must answer before it touches a client file. Start with uploading client documents to ChatGPT and the alternatives built for lawyers.

A four-person firm can need three of these. Buying one and expecting all four jobs is the expensive mistake here.

What Clio publishes as of September 2026

Clio's pricing page is the only authority on Clio's prices, and it publishes less than it used to.

If a comparison article quotes you a per-user Duo price, check it against Clio's own page first. Lawyerist's 2026 review of Clio Manage AI also reports no published price, and calls the AI an add-on, which reads differently from Clio's "included on Core and above." Get your rep's answer in writing.

Note too that Clio now sells legal research. Clio Work is AI that "reads your matters, finds the law, and drafts the work, with every answer cited to its source," running on the Clio Library, over one billion legal documents from courts and publishers, with citations checked through Cert, Clio's citator. Clio states it runs standalone or connected to Clio Manage. That is a research purchase, and Clio prices it as one.

The job: stay inside my practice-management system

If what you liked about Duo was that it lived where your matters live, the alternatives are other practice-management platforms with their own AI. From each vendor's pricing page, September 2026:

• MyCase publishes Basic $50, Pro $100, Advanced $130 per user per month billed annually. Its 8am IQ writing and document assistant appears on Pro; the case assistant and OCR discovery assistant on Advanced.
• PracticePanther publishes Solo $49, Essential $69, Business $89, Business Pro $114 per user per month billed annually. Its pricing page names no AI feature.
• Smokeball does not publish pricing: it "depends on the number of users at your firm, your selected plan, your contract term, and any optional products or services." Its plan grid names Archie AI as an add-on.
• Filevine does not publish pricing either: "All packages are custom built for your team's needs." Its AI is branded LOIS.

Be honest about the switching cost. Moving practice-management systems means migrating matters, documents, trust ledgers, and calendars, then retraining everyone. The job: research with citations I can check

This is where the "Duo alternative" framing misleads people most. What you want is a tool that retrieves authority and shows you the source, not one that produces confident prose about the law. Three questions settle it: which jurisdictions does it cover, does every citation open to a real document, and does it tell you when it could not verify something.

The job: drafting, or a general assistant

Neither a drafting tool nor a general chatbot verifies law. Whatever drafts your brief, something else checks the citations before filing.

2. Where does that data live, and what happens to it? Get the vendor on record about retention, model training, and isolation between firms.
3. Does it retrieve citations or generate them? Ask what it does when the answer is not in the source material.
4. What is the all-in annual cost? Per user, times seats, times contract term, plus the tier you are pushed into to reach the AI.

Buy for the job, not the brand on the login screen. A firm on Clio that adds a research tool is not admitting Clio was the wrong choice; it is buying the second thing it needed.
